Log #0002: Bell, Book And Coffee?

Here At Last

The Time Has Come At Last

Okay. I admit it. I was among the many Harry Potter fans who descended on Waldenbooks at midnight on June 21st to buy my reserved copy of the book. It was fun, really. Even in my not-large, fairly conservative area there were at least 100 people lined up with me; the newspaper estimated about 200. Many of them were dressed in costume and not all of those were children.

I wasn't in costume, per se. However, I was wearing all black (blouse and long skirt), my long black sweater (because it was chilly), had my hair in a bun, and sported the beaded necklace my sister made me in Slytherin colors. People were certain I had dressed as a Hogwarts professor whether I intended it or not. Children kept shooting me glances out of the corners of their eyes; I had the distinct impression I was making them nervous. I was dying for someone to misbehave in front of me so I could bark out, "Five points from Gryffindor!" but no one did. Pity.

Our bookstore had about 50 non-reserved copies of the book available, but these sold out within an hour. I received my reserved copy, and since I am constitutionally incapable of leaving a bookstore with only one book, I also bought an assortment of others.

Hat And Wand

Being organized when I put my mind to it, I had arranged weeks earlier to take June 21st off from work. I was strong, I didn't open the book when I got home in the wee hours of the morning, I set it aside and went to bed. When I woke up later Saturday morning I turned off my phone, brewed my coffee, sat down and read the entire book straight through. All 870 pages. It took me five and a half hours. I have to say, when I finally stood up my butt was sore and my eyes had a little trouble focusing at distance, but it was worth it. Then I had to nag my sister online to finish reading so we could discuss the plot.

Since there are already reviews galore out on the 'Net I won't write another one. Suffice it to say I loved the book and am already eagerly anticipating Book 6.
